To make the most of our stay in New York City in February, during the ECOSOC Youth Forum, we decided to reach out beyond the UN and meet with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development.
NY City administration is famous for its highly efficient youth programs aimed at creating opportunities for civic engagement, education and personal development of young New Yorkers. Special attention is given to marginalized youth groups.
Programs like Cornerstone provide a platform for social interaction, offer tutoring and a range of extracurricular activities. Others, like TEEN Action promote community service among youth. Paid internships are offered to talented young New Yorkers as part of Ladders for Leaders — public-private partnership program that enables NYC youth to kick-start their career at leading companies.
We were glad to learn from the DYCD Team experience, get inspiration and advice, as well as some training materials. Many initiatives are worth implementing in Ukrainian cities — so we hope to spread the word and try to implement some ideas.
